CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Keaton Wagler’s freshman season keeps climbing into rare air, and the national recognition is following fast.

The Illinois guard was named Tuesday as a Mid-Season Top 10 candidate for the 2026 Jerry West Award, presented annually by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame to the nation’s top shooting guard. On the same day, Wagler added another major honor, earning Oscar Robertson High-Major Player of the Month for January from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

Wagler has been one of the most productive freshmen in the country, averaging 18.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting nearly 48 percent from the field, 44 percent from three-point range and 82 percent at the free-throw line. Over the last 14 games, the Shawnee, Kansas, native has elevated his play even further, averaging 20.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists, with six 20-point performances during that stretch.

His breakout moment came Jan. 24, when Wagler poured in a program-record 46 points in a win at No. 4 Purdue, a performance that earned him National Player of the Week honors. He followed that effort with 28 points in Sunday’s victory at No. 5 Nebraska, continuing a stretch in which he has scored in double figures in 14 straight games.

For the month of January, Wagler averaged 21.5 points, 4.8 assists and 4.5 rebounds while leading Illinois to an unbeaten 8-0 record, numbers that secured him the Oscar Robertson award and placed him alongside Duke’s Cameron Boozer and BYU’s AJ Dybantsa as the only true freshmen to earn the honor this season.

Statistically, Wagler’s impact has been historic. He is one of only two NCAA freshmen averaging at least 18 points, five rebounds and four assists, and he leads the nation in offensive rating among high-usage players at 140.7, according to KenPom. His current scoring average is on pace to break Illinois’ freshman scoring record set by Kiwane Garris in 1993-94, and he ranks third in the Big Ten in conference scoring at 22.0 points per game.

The Jerry West Award, now in its 12th year, recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men’s basketball. Wagler is one of 10 midseason candidates, a list that will be narrowed to five finalists in March before a winner is selected later in the postseason. Fans can participate in the selection process through online voting, which counts as one committee vote.
