URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine is inviting the public to its annual Vet Med Open House on Sunday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the South Lincoln Avenue campus in Urbana. The event is free to attend and park, and it offers an immersive and educational experience for all ages.

This year’s theme, “Day at the Open House: Vet Med Comes to Life,” draws inspiration from the Night at the Museum movie series, promising hands-on learning and interactive exhibits that showcase the wide world of veterinary medicine.

The open house is entirely student-run, with over 40 booths, animal demonstrations, and educational panels led by current veterinary students. Attendees can expect everything from live sheep, goats, and cows to exotic small animals, teddy bear surgery for kids, and a chance to meet animals from the Wildlife Medical Clinic.

“We want to show people what’s happening inside the walls of the vet school,” said third-year vet student Savannah Lindberg, one of the event’s organizers. “It’s more than just dogs and cats—there’s a whole world to explore.”

Other highlights include a fistulated cow demonstration, farrier (horse care) demos, and service dog training sessions from Illini Service Dogs. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to stop by, explore the exhibits, grab a scavenger hunt bingo card for prizes, and learn more about how veterinarians support animal and human health.
