URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — Residents of Urbana will soon receive opt-out letters from the City of Urbana and Direct Energy, the low bidder for the city’s electricity aggregation program. The program, which offers a stable, fixed rate for electricity, will run from May 2026 through April 2027.

The letters, expected to arrive in late March or early April, will provide details about the new electric supply rate of $0.12880 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). The rate is fixed for the program’s duration and includes the purchase of renewable energy credits for 25% of the supplied electricity, making the energy supply greener.

Key Points for Residents:

  • Opt-out Option: Residents who prefer to opt out can do so without any termination fees or obligations.
  • Automatic Enrollment: Those who do nothing will automatically be enrolled and will receive the new rate starting with the May 2026 meter read.
  • Single Bill: Residents and small businesses will continue to receive one bill from Ameren Illinois.
  • Restrictions: Residents cannot participate in both municipal electric aggregation and power smart pricing at the same time.

For more information, an example of the opt-out letter is available on the city’s website.
