URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — Urbana High School students are being recognized for their outstanding community service at the fifth annual Mayoral Recognition Program, held Wednesday, April 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the UHS Gymnasium.

Mayor DeShawn Williams said that it takes character to participate in the Mayoral Recognition Program.

“These students are doing the kind of work that makes a real difference in our community, and they’re choosing to show up in meaningful ways,” Mayor Williams said. “That’s not something you can teach overnight. It says a lot about who they are, and it’s important that we take a moment to recognize that and let them know it matters.”

Since the program began in 2022, 369 students have contributed 27,684 hours to the community — more than three full years of service.

“The impact our Urbana High School students have made through their service is truly remarkable,” said Dr. Ivory-Tatum, Urbana School District Superintendent. “Collectively, their efforts represent not just thousands of hours, but years of meaningful contributions to the Urbana community and beyond. Through their leadership, compassion, and commitment to serving others, these students are helping build a stronger, more connected community. We are proud to celebrate their dedication.”

Students who complete at least 30 hours of volunteer service receive a Certificate of Service from the Mayor, Superintendent, and UHS Principal Jesse Guzman, with additional recognition for those exceeding 30 hours.

Pick one up. Be seduced by its glossy cover. Gaze upon the impossibly muscular body clad in a skin-tight suit. Our hero or heroine will surely be soaring, shouting, blasting a villain into next week. They are ridiculous. They are addictively great. Comic books, of the superhero variety, are 100% American.
