URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Urbana Park District’s Health and Wellness Center celebrated its first anniversary this weekend, marking a year of fitness, community connection, and growth that has exceeded expectations.

Community members gathered at the facility to enjoy cupcakes and popcorn, fitness activities, and open gym time. Visitors participated in basketball, pickleball, tennis, and group fitness classes throughout the day. The celebration highlighted the center’s mission to promote overall wellness for residents of all ages and abilities.

Rachel Lenz, Executive Director of the Urbana Park District, said the facility was designed to address wellness in a broad and inclusive way. “This center is about looking at wellness as a full picture — physical health, mental well-being, and social connection,” Lenz said. “It’s a place where people can come no matter where they’re starting and feel supported in reaching their own goals.”

Lenz said the response from the community during the center’s first year has been stronger than anticipated, with membership enrollment surpassing projections by more than 200 percent. “We were hopeful people would embrace it, but the level of participation has honestly been a wonderful surprise,” she said. “Seeing how quickly the community has made this space their own has been incredibly rewarding.”

As the center moves into its second year, park district leaders are already looking ahead to the next phase of development for the surrounding property. Plans include the addition of soccer fields and expanded parking to support growing use of the area. “This is just the beginning,” Lenz said. “Our next phase focuses on infrastructure — adding soccer fields and a parking lot — so we can continue building a destination that serves the entire community and grows with Urbana’s needs.”

Lenz added that a key goal for 2026 is continuing to raise awareness about the center and expand access so more residents can take advantage of its programs and amenities. The third phase of the expansion will occur in 2029-2030, completing a splash pad “spray ground” and a skate park, among other amenities.

More information about the Urbana Health and Wellness Center is available through the Urbana Park District’s website.
