URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is playing a supporting role in a first-of-its-kind statewide effort to promote environmentally sustainable filmmaking.

As part of a newly announced initiative from Gov. J. B. Pritzker, Illinois will offer an additional 5% tax credit to film and television productions that meet certified environmental standards. The program, launched through the Illinois Film Office, is the first in the nation to directly incentivize sustainability in the entertainment industry.

Leaders connected to the university say the campus is helping advance those efforts through its work in sustainability and business practices. Cassie Carroll, Assistant Director at the EnergySense Resilience Center at Illinois and a leader in the Illinois Green Business Program, praised the initiative as a major step forward.

Carroll said the incentive could help shift sustainable filmmaking from an optional goal to a standard industry practice, reducing waste and encouraging more efficient use of resources on production sets.

The university’s involvement reflects its broader role in advancing clean energy and sustainability efforts across Illinois. Officials say the new tax credit is expected to increase demand for green technologies and services, areas where university research and programs already play a key role.
