CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has officially been named one of Forbes’ “New Ivies” for the second year in a row, joining an elite list of public institutions that are redefining what it means to be prestigious in higher education.

In its second annual ranking, Forbes identified 20 colleges—10 public and 10 private—that are rising fast in academic reputation, career outcomes, and real-world preparation. According to the report, these universities are quickly becoming the go-to choices for top students and employers alike, even as traditional Ivy League schools face mounting criticism over high costs, internal challenges, and decreasing favor among hiring executives.

Notably, 37% of surveyed executives told Forbes they are less likely to hire Ivy League graduates today than they were just five years ago.

In contrast, schools like the University of Illinois are on the rise. With powerhouse engineering and computer science programs, massive research output, and a global alumni network, UIUC is proving that prestige doesn’t have to come with an East Coast address or a private-school price tag.

Joining the University of Illinois on the list from the state is Northwestern University, making Illinois one of only two states with multiple schools represented. Together, the two institutions are putting the Midwest—often overlooked in the elite college conversation—firmly on the academic map.

Other public universities on the list include the University of Michigan, Georgia Tech, and the University of Texas at Austin—schools known for innovation, accessibility, and producing graduates ready to make an impact from day one.
