Severe winds devastate Tolono, collapse storage building and cause power outages

Photo: Metro Services

TOLONO, IL (Chambana Today) – Sunday’s powerful winds wreaked havoc in Tolono, causing a storage building owned by Illinois Foundation Seeds to collapse, leaving debris scattered for yards in every direction. The building, which was used for storage, became the scene of a disaster when downed power lines and exposed structure added to the chaos. Pieces of sheet metal, ripped free by the strong gusts, were seen hanging precariously by lone wires, while the wind carried debris across the area.

The Tolono Fire Protection District responded to a small fire that broke out at the site after the collapse, though no major injuries were reported. Though it remains unclear what was stored in the building, witnesses noted the destruction caused by the storm’s winds, which also led to widespread power outages in Central Illinois. Thousands were left without power as local crews worked to restore services. Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage across the region.
