Severe Urbana traffic crash results in tragic fatality

URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – On Sunday, January 19, the Urbana Police Department (UPD) responded to a severe traffic crash at the intersection of University and Coler Avenue.

At 1:55 a.m., a Honda Civic had stopped at the intersection of University and Coler for a red light. Seconds later, a Mitsubishi SUV struct the Civic at high speeds and caused serious damage to both vehicles and persons inside. The Urbana Fire Department was called and provided life-saving measures.

The Civic had a total of five occupants:

  • Two occupants were released from the hospital with minor injuries.
  • Two occupants remain hospitalized, with one in critical condition.
  • Tragically, a 20-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Civic was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Her identity is being withheld pending family notification by the Champaign County Coroner’s office.

The driver of the SUV then fled the scene on foot southbound on Coler and has not been located. UPD detectives with an accident reconstruction investigator are currently investigating the crash.
