URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The holiday spirit is alive in Champaign County as two local organizations — the HOYCE Center (Helping Our Youth Change Every Day) and DREAAM (Driven to Reach Excellence in Academic Achievement) — team up once again for the Season of Giving Gift Drive.

Now underway through December 1, the initiative collects new toys, pajamas, and books for children ages 0–17, as well as hats, gloves, coats, and other items for local families in need. The annual Season of Giving Giveaway will take place December 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Urbana Park District’s Health and Wellness Center.

Jannea Klingenberg, founder and executive director of the H.O.Y.C.E Center, created the program to ensure no parent feels helpless during the holidays. “I never wanted anyone to feel the way I did when I couldn’t find help,” Klingenberg said. “This is a chance for families to receive gifts, pajamas, and books so that every child has something under the tree.”

DREAM founder Tracy Dace said the collaboration represents a deeper message of unity and hope. “Our families need to see organizations partnering together,” Dace said. “We’re stronger together, and this event shows that our community cares.”

The giveaway will include raffles, family activities, face painting, and even a community art canvas. Representatives from various cultural and faith communities — including Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah traditions — will also participate.

How to Give

Donations of new, unwrapped toys, pajamas, books, and items for teens (ages 13–17) can be dropped off through December 1 at several locations, including:

  • Urbana Police Department
  • Urbana Park District’s Phillips Recreation Center
  • Urbana Park District Health and Wellness Center (event host)
  • Champaign Police Department
  • Illini Media Group, 2603 W. Bradley Ave., Champaign
  • Rantoul Business Center
  • Village of Thomasboro

Those unable to drop off items can make a monetary donation online at www.hoycecenter.org.

Klingenberg also introduced a new giving challenge called “Join the Bump,” where participants donate increasing amounts — $5, $6, $7, and so on — and challenge friends to keep the giving going. “It’s a fun, affordable way for everyone to participate,” she said, noting that even small gifts make a difference.

Register to Receive

Families wishing to participate in the Season of Giving Giveaway must register online between November 17 and December 2 at www.hoycecenter.org. Each child’s name, age, and clothing size will be required to ensure the right fit for gifts.

No proof of income is required — only a government ID. Those without identification can contact Klingenberg directly through the H.O.Y.C.E Center for assistance. “We all have something to give,” Klingenberg said. “It’s not always money — it can be time, skills, or even sharing information. When we all give what we can, we lift up the entire community.”
