CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Shantel isa local resident, and entering her third year of pursuing a Business Administration degree, but she’s unlike many students.

In late 2018, a life-threatening heart condition left her unable to work, eventually costing her both her job and home. With no income and disability benefits denied, she faced homelessness. That was until 2019, when she connected with ECHO Housing and Employment Support in Cunningham Township.

With the help of case manager Mike and the ECHO program, Shantel slowly started to rebuild her life. In April, she finally graduated from the ECHO program.

A C-U native, Shantel has deep roots in the community. She was raised by her aunt and grandfather and was legally emancipated at 16. She’s spent 26 years in the service industry. Now, she’s focused on earning her Business Administration degree, launching a business, and encouraging others with her story.

“I know my life won’t ever be easy,” she said. “But that fight has purpose. And if my story helps even one person, then it’s worth it.”

The Cunningham Children’s Home is asking you to honor Shantel’s journey and the journeys of many others like her by participating in this year’s Be A Hero 5K. For more information and instructions on signing up, visit the Cunningham Children’s Home’s website.
