CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — As cold weather settles across Illinois, the American Red Cross is urging residents to take precautions when heating their homes. The organization warns that heating equipment is a leading cause of home fires during the winter months, which see a 30% increase in fire-related emergencies compared to warmer seasons.

“Heating equipment is a leading cause of home fires in this country,” said Kellie O’Connell, CEO of the Red Cross of Illinois. “Help keep your family safe by providing at least three feet of space around all heating equipment, testing your smoke alarms monthly, and practicing your two-minute home fire escape plan.”

The Red Cross recommends placing space heaters on hard, level, nonflammable surfaces, keeping them away from bedding, drapes, and rugs, and turning them off before leaving a room or going to sleep. Homeowners are also encouraged to have furnaces, chimneys, and fireplaces inspected annually and to avoid using ovens or stoves for heat.

In the past week, Red Cross volunteers assisted five individuals affected by home fires in Danville, Atwood, and Kankakee, providing emergency supplies and health and mental health services.

Residents who need help installing smoke alarms or developing an escape plan can contact their local Red Cross office or visit redcross.org/fire for more information.
