RANTOUL, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Rantoul National Aviation Center has been selected by the Federal Aviation Administration for eligibility under the Military Airport Program, opening the door to an estimated $36.4 million in federal funding over the next five years.

The designation, effective in fiscal year 2027, allows the airport to compete for grants aimed at improving former or current military airfields and expanding their capacity for civilian aviation use. The Rantoul airport was established in 1993 following the closure of Chanute Air Force Base.

Officials say the funding could support a wide range of infrastructure upgrades, including an updated airport layout plan, runway safety area improvements, lighting and drainage rehabilitation, construction of new taxiways, expanded hangar facilities, and fuel farm upgrades.

“This is a major moment for Rantoul and a real investment in our future. This $36 million commitment over the next five years positions our airport to keep up with growing demand while strengthening the infrastructure that supports it,” said Mayor Samuel E. Hall III. “What excites me most is what this makes possible. We’re not just making upgrades — we’re creating opportunities for economic development, job growth and new business activity in and around the airport.”

Airport officials say the improvements could help expand general aviation, corporate travel services, and flight instruction while encouraging additional business development in the surrounding airport district.

“This grant is going to allow us to polish the diamond formerly known as Chanute Air Force Base and develop it into an airport that will serve not only Rantoul, but the surrounding area, for decades to come,” said Airport Manager Bob Coverdill.

Local leaders say the designation represents a long-term investment in infrastructure, jobs, and regional economic growth.
