CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Motorists in northwest Champaign should prepare for significant traffic changes beginning Friday, February 27, as construction related to the Garden Hills Phase 3 Project gets underway.

Paula Drive will be fully closed to vehicular traffic at its intersection with Mattis Avenue starting that day. In addition, a lane closure will be in place along Mattis Avenue to allow construction on the east lane of the northbound side of the roadway. Intermittent closures will also occur on the west lane of the southbound side of Mattis during daily construction activities.

On February 25 and 26, crews will install long-term barriers for the northbound lane closure along Mattis Avenue in preparation for the work.

Access to residential driveways in the area will be maintained throughout the project. Emergency access to Fire Station 5 will also remain available. Pedestrian access to all homes will continue during construction.

The closure will remain in place until further notice due to multiple projects taking place within the intersection, including work by the City of Champaign and Illinois American Water.

Officials note that construction is weather dependent and may be delayed due to inclement weather. Additional lane and road closures are expected as the project progresses, and updates will be announced in future phases.

Residents and motorists are encouraged to use caution in the area and seek alternate routes when possible.
