Old Orchard lanes shut down after fifth health violation in Champaign County

SAVOY, IL (Chambana Today) – A popular Savoy bowling alley and food establishment has been shut down after receiving a red placard from the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District earlier this week, prompting the suspension of its food permit.

On April 22, health inspectors cited Old Orchard Lanes, located at 901 N. Dunlap Ave., for multiple food safety violations — including their fifth consecutive failure to maintain proper cold food storage temperatures.

During the inspection, blue cheese and thousand island dressings were found above the required 41ºF in a dressing cooler. Staff told inspectors the dressings had been moved from the walk-in cooler three hours earlier. The rest of the items in the cooler were within safe limits.

Inspectors also discovered vanilla and chocolate ice cream mixes stored above 41ºF in the ice cream mix wells. Both were discarded on-site.

Because of the repeated cold-holding issues, the establishment was issued an “R4” repeat violation, which, under local health code, triggers serious consequences — including possible administrative hearings, permit suspension or revocation, and even legal action.

Additional violations noted during the visit included:

  • 16 pans of mozzarella cheese in the walk-in cooler with no prep dates

  • Boxes of food stored on the floor in the walk-in cooler, freezer, and dough room

Old Orchard Lanes will remain closed until it comes into compliance with all health regulations.
