CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — A quiet moment during chapel at Cunningham Children’s Home recently turned into a powerful reminder of how hope and peace can grow through honesty and human connection.

During a service at the Spiritual Life Center, Chaplain Kate shared openly with the youth that she was struggling to feel hopeful and at peace that day. Her honesty was met with compassion from the children in attendance, many of whom face significant challenges of their own.

After the service, a resident identified as Mack asked to stay behind and talk about music. A drummer, Mack shared his favorite songs with the chaplain, and the two sang and laughed together as they walked back toward his residential unit.

Before returning to the Residential Treatment Center, Mack expressed gratitude for being in a place that reminds him to look to faith for peace, even during moments of hopelessness. He also shared appreciation for the adults at Cunningham who give him attention, care and encouragement.

For staff members, the moment underscored the impact of consistent support and safe relationships. Chaplain Kate later reflected on the experience with gratitude for Cunningham’s direct care staff and for the young man’s willingness to be open and vulnerable.
