URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Michael Cervantes has been appointed Interim Deputy Chief of the Urbana Police Department, marking a historic milestone as the city’s first Hispanic officer to hold the position. The announcement was made at the most recent Urbana City Council meeting.

Police Chief Larry D. Boone praised Cervantes for his “hard work, courage, and unwavering commitment” to the community, noting that he leads by example and inspires those around him. Urbana Mayor DeShawn Williams highlighted Cervantes’ dedication to accountability and measurable growth within the department.

Cervantes brings more than two decades of experience to his new role, having served in multiple specialized units within the Urbana Police Department, including the Criminal Investigations Division, K-9 Unit, Street Crimes Unit, and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. His law enforcement career follows distinguished service in the United States Navy, including deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Cervantes holds a Master of Science in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego, a Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Illinois University, and an Associate of Applied Science in law enforcement from Excelsior College. Throughout his career, he has earned numerous awards, including Officer of the Year, Life Saving Awards, and commendations from the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Attorney’s Office.
