Man charged with murder following Champaign shooting

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A 21-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred on May 1 in Champaign. Officers responded to the 500 block of East Columbia Avenue at approximately 5:22 p.m., where they found Aaron Sibley suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound in a nearby alley. Despite immediate medical aid from police and the Champaign Fire Department, Sibley later died at a local hospital.

During the initial investigation, Charles Haynes was detained and arrested on weapons-related offenses. Following a weekend review by Champaign Police detectives and Crime Scene Officers, the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Haynes with four counts of first-degree murder.

Authorities continue to investigate and are seeking assistance from the community. Residents and businesses with exterior surveillance cameras in the area are encouraged to contact the police at 217-351-4545. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477, online at 373tips.com, or via the “P3 Tips” mobile app. Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest in a homicide case.

Police emphasized that all leads are being pursued and that the public’s cooperation is vital in bringing justice and ensuring community safety.
