CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (Chambana Today) — A significant milestone in one of central Illinois’ largest highway reconstruction projects was celebrated Wednesday as the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), along with Champaign County officials and local leaders, marked the opening of the new southbound I-57 to westbound I-74 flyover ramp just west of Champaign.

The long-awaited ramp opening is part of the $125.8 million reconstruction of the I-57/I-74 interchange; a transformative project aimed at improving safety, traffic flow, and infrastructure longevity at one of the region’s busiest crossroads.

At a media event held on the ramp itself, Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi joined local officials to commemorate the first of two major flyover ramps that will redefine travel in the area. The southbound I-57 to westbound I-74 connection is a key link for commercial and commuter traffic moving through east-central Illinois.

“This is more than concrete and steel—it’s a smart, long-term investment in safety, efficiency, and regional growth,” said Secretary Biagi.

Officials emphasized the scope of the multi-phase project, which replaces the aging cloverleaf design with modern flyovers to reduce weaving and improve traffic movement. The second flyover ramp—linking westbound I-74 to northbound I-57—is currently under construction and expected to open at a later date.

The new ramp will open to drivers later this week, following final safety checks. Event parking was available along the closed portion of the ramp. In the event of inclement weather, officials had planned to move the ceremony to IDOT’s field construction office at 2022 Glen Park Drive in Champaign.
