CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – A Mahomet man was cited for a Scott’s Law violation after Illinois State Police said he struck a stopped squad car on March 1 near Chebanse.

The incident occurred when a State Police trooper responded to debris in the road on I-57 at approximately 2 p.m. The trooper parked in the right lane with emergency lights flashing and was removing the debris when the Lincoln SUV driven by 66-year-old Harold McComb of Mahomet hit the squad car from behind.

The trooper was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while McComb was also transported with injuries. McComb was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and for a Scott’s Law violation. State Police remind drivers that Scott’s Law, also known as the Move Over Law, requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching any vehicle with flashing lights. Violations can result in fines between $250 and $10,000, and if an injury occurs, the violator’s license may be suspended.

Since the start of 2025, Illinois State Police has responded to three Move Over Law-related crashes, highlighting the importance of adhering to the law for the safety of first responders.
