CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — In this week’s episode of Focus, Monica Nyman, a Senior Registered Dietitian with the St. Louis District Dairy Council, helped set the record straight on lactose intolerance and offered practical advice for those who love dairy but struggle with digestive discomfort.

Nyman emphasized that lactose intolerance is not the same as a milk allergy, noting that most people self-diagnose and often unnecessarily avoid dairy altogether. “Lactose intolerance is simply the body’s reduced ability to digest lactose, the natural sugar in milk, due to lower levels of the lactase enzyme,” she explained.

Unlike a true milk allergy, which can trigger serious immune responses, lactose intolerance typically causes mild symptoms like bloating or gas. Nyman stressed that most people with lactose intolerance can still enjoy dairy by making small changes—such as switching to lactose-free dairy products, mixing dairy with other foods to slow digestion, or using over-the-counter lactase enzyme supplements.

She also debunked myths like the idea that lactose-free milk comes from “special cows,” and highlighted lesser-known facts—like cheese and Greek yogurt often having minimal lactose, making them easier to digest.

To continue spreading awareness, the Dairy Council is visiting nine schools in Champaign County the first week of October with their Mobile Dairy Classroom, featuring Louise the Jersey cow and 24 hands-on presentations.
