CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The No. 17 Fighting Illini sent an emphatic message ahead of the 2025-26 season opener with a commanding 92-65 victory over Illinois State in an exhibition game on Sunday. Held at State Farm Center before 15,180 fans, the match showcased Illinois’ talent and depth, with four players scoring in double figures and a dominating performance on both ends of the floor.
Freshman forward David Mirkovic made an immediate impact in his unofficial debut, leading the Illini with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists. Mirkovic’s double-double performance marked a promising start to what could be a breakout season for the highly-touted recruit.
Joining Mirkovic in double figures was fellow freshman Brandon Lee, who poured in 17 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance from the field. Lee also converted 6-of-8 free throws, displaying his efficiency and poise. Senior guard Kylan Boswell added 14 points, while junior Zvonimir Ivisic chipped in 15 points and five rebounds.
Illinois wasted no time asserting its dominance, jumping out to an early 9-9 tie before rattling off a stunning 34-10 run that broke the game wide open. The Illini’s defense helped fuel the offensive surge, forcing Illinois State into difficult shots and holding them to just 40% shooting for the game. Illinois also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Redbirds 44-29.
The Redbirds, who were never able to recover from Illinois’ early blitz, were led by a 24-point effort from guard Chris Harris, but struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 28% from three-point range. Illinois, on the other hand, was sharp from long distance, hitting 39% of their three-point attempts.
In the second half, the Illini maintained their lead, with neither team stringing together a scoring run of more than six points. The game’s outcome was never in doubt after Illinois’ big first-half surge, and the Illini cruised to the 27-point win.
Illinois will open the regular season at home on Monday, Nov. 3, against Jackson State at 7:30 p.m. CT, with the game televised on Big Ten Network.
