IDPH updates Illinois School Vaccination Dashboard as measles cases rise nationwide

SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has released its updated Illinois School Vaccination Coverage Dashboard, providing the public with an interactive tool to monitor immunization trends across the state during the 2024–25 school year.

The dashboard uses data collected by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to show vaccination coverage at the state, county, and school district levels. IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra emphasized the importance of the tool in light of ongoing measles outbreaks elsewhere in the country.

“As a pediatrician, I know how critical vaccines are to protecting children from preventable diseases,” Vohra said. “This dashboard empowers families with real-time data to guide their health decisions.”

Illinois maintains a strong statewide measles vaccination rate of over 95%, and more than 70% of schools meet or exceed that level, which helps build herd immunity. However, about 10% of schools have vaccination rates below 91%, making them more susceptible to outbreaks.

Illinois State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders called the dashboard a vital resource. “By identifying vaccination gaps, we can work together to ensure every student stays healthy and has an uninterrupted opportunity to learn,” he said.

The data also shows slight declines in some vaccine rates—measles, mumps, rubella, and DTaP—all fell by about 0.1–0.3%, while pneumococcal pneumonia and Hib vaccines saw modest gains. Traditional public schools consistently showed higher vaccination rates than charter and nonpublic schools.
