MONTICELLO, IL (Chambana Today) — A free program on safely preserving fruits and vegetables at home is coming to the Piatt County Extension Office later this month.

Preserve at Home, part of the Growing Community series with DeWitt and Piatt Master Gardeners, will run from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, May 19, at 210 S. Market St. in Monticello. The session will cover water bath canning, pressure canning, freezing, drying, and fermenting produce from home gardens or farmers markets. Participants can also bring dial-gauge pressure canner lids and gauges for a free accuracy test.

“From jams and pickles to fruit leather and sauerkraut, it’s easy to eat summer produce all year long,” said Horticulture Program Coordinator Beth Miglin.

The program is free, but registration by May 18 is requested at go.illinois.edu/GrowingCommunity. Those needing accommodations can call 217-762-2191.
