GIBSON CITY-MELVIN-SIBLEY, IL (Chambana Today) – Former Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (GCMS) eighth-grade teacher and coach, Robert Dinkins, was arrested Thursday in Macon, Georgia on six counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. The charges stem from an ongoing investigation launched earlier this year following allegations of inappropriate conduct with a student.
Dinkins, who was placed on administrative leave in the spring after reportedly sending inappropriate text messages to a high school student, was officially terminated by the GCMS school board in a unanimous vote just weeks later. At the time, school officials stated their commitment to student safety and a thorough review of staff conduct.
Authorities say the investigation intensified after law enforcement executed a search warrant and seized Dinkins’ phone and other electronic devices. Forensic analysis revealed information indicating that Dinkins had engaged in sexual activity with a student, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant.
Despite being given the opportunity to surrender voluntarily, Dinkins did not turn himself in. He was taken into custody in Georgia and is expected to be extradited to Ford County, Illinois, where he will face a judge and further legal proceedings.
In response to the arrest, the GCMS School District released a statement reaffirming its dedication to student well-being and announcing a partnership with Care Solace to offer mental health support to students, families, and staff affected by the case.
“Our number one priority is, and always will be, the welfare, safety and education of our students,” the district’s statement read. “It’s important that all students know that if they are ever scared, sad, or hurt by someone, they should always feel comfortable telling a teacher, principal or other school adult who will help them.”
