URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — Film lovers in Champaign-Urbana will have a chance to revisit a stylish neo-noir gem later this month as Film-Fanatic.Club continues its repertory cinema series, “Film Fanatic Movie Nights,” with a big-screen showing of The Man Who Wasn’t There on Thursday, March 19.

The 2001 black-and-white crime drama from directors Joel Coen and Ethan Coen will screen at 7 p.m. at Analog Wine Library, 129 N. Race St., Urbana. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The film stars Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand, James Gandolfini and Scarlett Johansson in a darkly comic tale of small-town ambition and moral drift. Shot in luminous black and white and driven by a noir-style voiceover, the film is often cited as one of the Coen brothers’ most underappreciated works.

The screening will be introduced by Sanford Hess, former operator of the Art Theatre, who will also lead a post-film discussion. Hess describes the film as a “coolly elegant neo-noir” that distills the Coens’ signature blend of dry wit and existential unease into one of their most restrained and haunting achievements.

The event is presented by Film-Fanatic.Club, a new movie club planning at least 10 themed screenings across Champaign-Urbana in 2026. Each program includes a surprise short film and a post-screening conversation designed to foster a communal cinema experience in an intimate venue setting.

The March 19 event is co-sponsored by the Chambana Film Society as part of its Savoy Arthouse series and is billed as “A Sanford Hess Arthouse Experience.”

Advance tickets are $10 online, with $12 admission at the door. A $20 Film-Fanatic.Club membership includes free admission to the event and a complimentary drink ticket.

More information and tickets are available at www.Film-Fanatic.Club.
