CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Local residents are being advised to check their kitchens after the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about imported cookware that may leach lead. The alert now includes 19 pots and pans made from aluminum, brass, and aluminum alloys such as Hindalium and Indalium. Some manufacturers have recalled affected products, while others have yet to act.

Health experts say there is no safe level of lead exposure, especially for children, pregnant women, and those who are breastfeeding. Lead can build up in the body over time and has been linked to developmental problems in children. Heating during cooking increases the risk of contamination.

Residents are urged to throw away any cookware on the FDA’s list and not donate it. Anyone concerned about potential exposure should contact a healthcare provider about a blood test.

Affected products include Sonex aluminum pots, IKM brass and aluminum pans, Silver Horse aluminum items, and Dolphin brand saucepans, among others distributed through JSM Foods, Lotus Mom, and Win Chong Trading Corp.

Which pans are impacted?

The FDA is warning consumers not to use the following pans:

  • Sonex aluminum pot (Manufacturer: Sonex Cookware)
  • IKM aluminum saucepan, size 2 with a 9″ wooden handle (Manufacturer: JSM Foods)

  • Brass tope (Manufacturer: Kraftwares)
  • Aluminum kadai size 5 (Distributor: Lotus Mom)
  • Silver Horse aluminum caldero 28

  • 3-quart aluminum saucepan (Distributor: Win Chong Trading Corp.)

Per the FDA, some of the brands that make these pans have already agreed to recall them. The FDA also noted that some brands have been “notified” of the agency’s findings, but is unclear if the items have been pulled from the shelves.
