Driver ticketed after attempting to pass train in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — A driver was ticketed Monday afternoon after attempting to drive around a slow-moving train and being struck in Champaign, according to police.

Officers with the Champaign Police Department responded to a vehicle-versus-train crash near the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Ginger Bend Drive around 3:30 p.m. Police said the driver tried to go around the train when it struck the passenger side of the vehicle at a slow rate of speed. No injuries were reported.

The driver was cited for failing to yield at a railroad crossing.

Following the crash, traffic on Springfield Avenue east of Duncan Road was briefly stopped while crews responded.
