CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. — A Champaign restaurant was shut down and issued a red health placard, while an Urbana hotel received a yellow placard, following recent food safety inspections conducted by the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.

Cravings, located at 603 S. Wright St. in Champaign, was given a red placard on September 18 after inspectors found three new risk factor violations and three repeat violations during a follow-up inspection. Notably, inspectors found improperly stored raw eggs, cooked fried chicken held at unsafe temperatures, and inadequate cooling of noodles — all in violation of public health codes.

The inspection followed a September 3 visit, which resulted in a yellow placard and over ten violations. Cravings failed to submit a completed Food Safety Management plan, cooling procedures, and required training documentation. As a result, their health permit was suspended, and all food operations are currently halted until further notice.

Meanwhile, Hotel Royer, located at 201 S. Race St. in Urbana, was issued a yellow placard on September 24 after inspectors found nine violations, including repeat issues. Items like mashed potatoes and fettucine noodles were found stored at unsafe temperatures, and multiple foods exceeded their allowable seven-day shelf life.

Additional concerns at the hotel included misuse of a hand sink, an unclean ventilation hood, and improper ice bucket storage. A follow-up inspection will be conducted within 10 business days, and the facility must submit a correction plan by October 8.
