CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL (Chambana Today) — A construction worker was killed in an overnight crash in a work zone on eastbound Interstate 74 in Champaign County, prompting a lengthy highway closure and major traffic delays this morning.

Authorities said the crash happened in the eastbound lanes of I-74 within an active construction area. Emergency crews responded to the scene overnight, where one construction worker was pronounced dead.

As investigators worked at the scene, eastbound I-74 remained closed. Traffic was being diverted onto southbound Interstate 57, while the ramp from I-57 back to eastbound I-74 was also shut down.

Officials warned motorists to expect delays lasting several hours and urged drivers to seek alternate routes through the area.

Few details about the crash or the identity of the worker had been released as of this morning. Authorities have not yet said how many vehicles were involved or what may have led to the collision.
