Champaign, IL (May 4, 2026) — Starting Monday, May 4, 2026, a major road construction project will kick off on South Mattis Avenue, stretching from Windsor Road to Curtis Road. The $8.5 million project, contracted to William Charles Construction of Rockford, Illinois, will bring significant upgrades to the busy corridor. The work, funded by a mix of local and Federal Surface Transportation – Urban (STU) funds, is aimed at enhancing the road to meet arterial street standards.

The project will include the installation of new concrete pavement, curbs, and gutters, as well as storm sewers and street lighting. In addition, new on-street bike lanes and a multi-use path will be constructed to improve safety and access for cyclists and pedestrians.

Full Road Closure Ahead:
To ensure the safety of workers and the efficiency of construction, South Mattis Avenue will be fully closed to traffic for the duration of the project, which is expected to last until December 4, 2026. Detour routes will be clearly marked, and drivers can access neighborhoods and businesses along Curtis Road via Duncan Road or Prospect Avenue.

The City of Champaign urges travelers to exercise caution when approaching the work zone and appreciates the public’s patience during this essential infrastructure upgrade. The improvements are part of the city’s long-term plan to enhance transportation safety and functionality across the area.
