CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The I Read, I Count program, an initiative designed to help kindergarten and first-grade students in Champaign-Urbana strengthen their reading and math abilities, is calling on community members to volunteer for its upcoming spring session. Volunteers will work one-on-one with students, dedicating just one hour a week to support critical foundational learning in local elementary schools.

Since its launch in 2019, the program has grown significantly, now reaching several schools across both Champaign and Urbana. This spring, volunteers will focus on enhancing reading skills, reinforcing key areas such as letter recognition, sight words, and phonics. The program’s goals are to bring students up to grade level by the end of the session, preparing them for future academic success.

According to Cheryl Barringer, the I Read, I Count program coordinator, the program has seen impressive growth, now serving more schools and impacting hundreds of students each semester. “This initiative is not just about education; it’s about giving children the tools they need for future success,” said Barringer. “When children are behind in their foundational skills, it affects their entire future, from school to career opportunities. Volunteers play a crucial role in giving them the attention they need to succeed.”

While the program has continued to expand, organizers are particularly looking for more volunteers to help. Volunteers commit to just one hour each week, but those who have additional time to give can volunteer more. Volunteers don’t need a background in education, as training and resources are provided.

The program will run from March 3 through May 8, 2026, with applications for volunteers now open until January 30. Volunteers must be 18 or older and can choose a school and time that fits their schedule. A background check is required for all applicants, as they will be working directly with students.

In addition to individual volunteers, the program is seeking bilingual speakers of Spanish and French to support bilingual classrooms in schools such as Yankee Ridge Elementary in Urbana and Stratton Elementary in Champaign. The program also encourages businesses to get involved through a special incentive initiative. If three or more employees volunteer for the program, the company will receive a delivery of Parlor Donuts as a thank you.

For more information on how to apply, visit www.champaigncounty.org/iread-icount or email Barringer directly at ireadicount@champaigncounty.org. Volunteers can make a lasting difference in a child’s educational journey by donating just one hour each week.

Deadline to apply: January 30, 2026.
