Average Joe: College football is almost here: U of I’s most important match up may not be who you might think

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — It’s almost here! The 2025 college football season! While your University of Illinois Fighting Illini’s 2025 schedule is stacked with challenging matchups—versus preseason ranked Ohio State and Indiana and solid Big Ten programs like USC, Washington, and others, the week 2 showdown against Duke on September 6 in Durham is, in this Average Joe’s opinion, the one they have to win.

This game isn’t simply a week 2 game, it’s a clear early litmus test for Illinois’ national aspirations and precursor to the rest of their 2025 season. Coming off last year’s 10-3 season, including a Citrus Bowl trophy and a top 25 ranking in final polls, Illinois enters 2025 with big expectations.

This road trip to Duke carries real weight. It’s a tough environment and will present what would be comparable to a Big Ten caliber opponent.

Matter of fact, betting markets reflect the challenge: ESPN’s Matchup Predictor gives Duke a slight edge—51.4% to Illinois’s 48.6% ESPN.com.

As it stands, I think there are only two defensible losses on this season’s schedule for a team with that type of aspirations (#3 Ohio State and @ #20 Indiana) and Duke isn’t one of them.

Winning this matchup would mark Illinois’s first true statement of the season—a roadmap to bowl eligibility or even forementioned playoff contention. It would also build critical momentum just as the Illini enter their brutal Big Ten slate, helping cement confidence across the roster and fan base.

In that sense, the Duke game is more than just early-season scheduling—it’s a make-or-break moment that sets the tone for everything that follows in 2025. If Illinois can win in Durham, they’ll have proven the grit, poise, and consistency needed for a historic campaign.

That is if they beat Western Illinois first.
