URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – Urbana Police have arrested Kartila Brooks, 40, of Champaign, for Aggravated DUI and DUI drugs in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on March 13 at the intersection of Philo Road and Colorado Avenue. The crash claimed the life of a two-month-old infant.

Brooks was taken into custody Friday morning, April 11, at 9:00 a.m. following the results of chemical testing, which revealed she had THC levels above the legal limit at the time of the crash. She was booked into the Champaign County Jail.

At approximately 5:52 p.m. on March 13, Urbana Police responded to a four-car collision. Investigators say Brooks was driving a GMC Envoy east on Colorado Avenue when she ran a stop sign, clipping a Subaru Outback and crashing into a Chrysler Pacifica traveling north on Philo Road. The impact severely injured a 2-month-old infant seated in the Chrysler, who later died from their injuries.

The GMC then overturned and struck a Chevy Equinox. Several other occupants, including two siblings and the mother of the infant, were treated and released from Carle Foundation Hospital.

At the time of the crash, Brooks was cited for disobeying a stop sign and operating an uninsured vehicle, a Class A misdemeanor when bodily harm occurs.
