CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Two weeks after Champaign Township Supervisor Kyle Patterson announced his resignation, the City of Champaign Township has officially opened the application process to fill the vacant leadership role.

Patterson’s final day was Nov. 18, and the Township Board unanimously accepted his resignation during its meeting Tuesday night. Under Illinois law, the board now has 60 days to appoint a replacement who will serve the remainder of the term through May 2029.

The township outlined four requirements for candidates seeking the position. Applicants must be registered voters and have lived within the City of Champaign Township for at least one year. They must not have been convicted of an “infamous crime,” including bribery, perjury, or any felony. In addition, they must belong to the Democratic Party—the same party affiliation as the outgoing supervisor—as required by state statute for mid-term appointments.

Applications are available on the City of Champaign Township’s website and must be returned to the City Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. on Dec. 16. Submissions can be emailed to cityclerk@champaignil.gov or hand-delivered to 102 N. Neil St. in downtown Champaign. Applicants submitting by email are asked to label the subject line: “Application for Township Supervisor.”

The Township Board plans to interview candidates during its meetings on Jan. 6 and 7, with a final appointment vote scheduled for Jan. 13.
