Champaign police investigate fatal shooting on South Mattis Avenue

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Champaign police are investigating a shooting that left a 17-year-old male dead and a 19-year-old hospitalized in stable condition.

Officers were dispatched to the 800 block of South Mattis Avenue at 6:43 p.m. on February 9, 2026, following a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found the 17-year-old victim injured inside a vehicle in a parking lot. Emergency personnel began life-saving measures, but the victim later died from his injuries.

Shortly after 7:00 p.m., police learned a second victim, a 19-year-old man from Champaign, had arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds. He remains in stable condition.

Champaign police are canvassing the area for witnesses and reviewing video footage from nearby homes and businesses. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Champaign police at 217-351-4545.
