CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire at a single-family home in the 1300 block of W. Ridge Lane on Tuesday, April 7, at 10:47 a.m. The fire was reported by a passerby who saw smoke and flames coming from the roof of the two-story home.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the fire had originated in a solar panel on the roof. Crews quickly deployed multiple hose lines, and the fire was contained to the exterior solar panel, preventing further damage to the home.

The fire was determined to be accidental, caused by the home’s solar system. No injuries were reported among the firefighters, and the occupant was not home at the time of the fire. As a result, no displacement is expected for the homeowner.
