CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office will join law enforcement agencies across Illinois in stepping up seat belt enforcement during the upcoming Memorial Day travel period.

The annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign runs from May 15 through May 26 and will include increased patrols and high-visibility enforcement efforts focused on seat belt violations.

“Buckle up every trip, every time,” Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said in a statement. “Many of the fatalities from crashes the Sheriff’s Office investigated last year may have been prevented with seat belt use. Seat belts save lives, and we are committed to keeping our roads safe.”

Deputies will conduct enforcement efforts during both daytime and nighttime hours. Drivers and passengers who fail to wear seat belts can expect to receive citations, officials said.

Illinois law requires all drivers and passengers to wear seat belts. State officials reported seat belt use reached 93% in 2025, though unrestrained fatalities remain a concern, especially during overnight hours.

The campaign is funded through federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

More information about safe driving practices is available at Its Not A Game Illinois.
