CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Champaign County officials are encouraging families to take simple steps to prevent gun-related tragedies through the Be SMART campaign. The initiative, supported by the Illinois Department of Public Health and Champaign County Government, focuses on the importance of secure firearm storage and responsible gun ownership.

The campaign highlights a stark national statistic: gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children in the United States. Officials say proper storage—such as locking firearms, keeping ammunition separate, and ensuring children cannot access guns—is one of the most effective ways to reduce injuries and fatalities.

As part of the campaign, residents are encouraged to follow the “SMART” principles: Secure guns in homes and vehicles, Model responsible behavior around firearms, Ask about unsecured guns in other homes, Recognize the role guns play in suicide, and Tell friends and neighbors to practice safe storage.

County leaders hope that widespread adoption of these practices will help reduce preventable deaths and keep firearms out of the hands of children. More information is available at BeSMARTforKids.org and champaigncountygunsafety.org.
