CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — A Champaign attorney has been disciplined by the Illinois Supreme Court after professional misconduct findings that include misleading a client and publicly questioning a judge’s integrity.

Jason Lawrence Spangehl, who has been licensed to practice law in Illinois since 2010, was suspended from the practice of law for six months and until further order of the court. However, that suspension was stayed in its entirety and replaced with a two-year period of probation, subject to specific conditions imposed by the court.

According to a summary of attorney discipline orders released during the Supreme Court of Illinois’ January 2026 term, Spangehl failed to file an immigration petition on behalf of a client who had paid him to do so. He then made false statements to the client about the status of the matter and delayed refunding the client’s fee.

In a separate incident cited by the court, Spangehl also made false statements about the integrity of a judge in a post on his personal Facebook page, conduct the court found violated professional standards.

The suspension “until further order of the Court” means the discipline is considered indefinite, and continued practice is contingent on compliance with probationary terms. Any future reinstatement or modification would require court approval following further proceedings before the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission.

Spangehl is one of several attorneys statewide disciplined by the Illinois Supreme Court during its January 2026 term, which included suspensions, probationary sanctions, and disbarments for misconduct ranging from neglect of client matters to criminal behavior.
