CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Champaign Police have made an arrest in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred early this morning on the 1600 block of W. Healey Street. At approximately 12:03 a.m. on March 22, officers responded to reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, they found two victims, both 22 years old from Champaign. The woman, suffering critical injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she remains in critical condition. The man, however, was discovered nearby with fatal stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Champaign County Coroner.

The investigation suggests that the victims were attacked inside their residence by a person they knew. After the stabbing, the victims ran outside seeking help, while the attacker fled the scene. With the help of neighboring law enforcement agencies, Champaign Police located and arrested Alex Muanambta, 23, at a residence in Rantoul. Muanambta has been charged with First-Degree Murder and Attempted Murder, though additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

While an arrest has been made, police are continuing to gather information. They are canvassing the area for additional witnesses and video footage that may aid in the investigation. Local businesses and residents with surveillance cameras are urged to contact the police department.

Champaign Police also extended their thanks to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and the Rantoul Police Department for their assistance. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477 or online at 373tips.com.
