Air travel disruptions reach Champaign region as national flight cancellations surge

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The federal government shutdown, now on day 37, has triggered widespread air travel disruptions across the U.S., including in central Illinois. Nationally, around 445 flights were canceled this Friday, with reductions expected to increase to 10 % in major markets by November 14.

Local travellers using Willard Airport in Savoy (FAA code CMI) are advised to exercise extra caution. Although Willard has traditionally enjoyed relatively low cancellation rates (about 2.16 % in recent years) and delays at the airport had been on the rise, the national staffing strain at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and increased cancellations elsewhere could impact connecting flights through major hubs.

More than 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 security screeners are working without pay, accumulating overtime and six-day workweeks. The FAA is calling the situation a major safety concern rather than a political issue. Customers affected by cancellations—including those tied to air traffic controller shortages—are entitled to refunds or alternate flights.

Travellers flying out of Willard are encouraged to monitor flight status closely, download airline apps, turn on notifications, and check for cancellations or schedule changes.
