CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Drivers in Champaign can look forward to safer and more efficient commutes as the $251.8 million I-57/74 Interchange Reconstruction Project progresses toward modernizing one of the region’s busiest roadways.

Serving nearly 40,000 vehicles daily—25% of which are freight trucks—the interchange no longer meets today’s traffic demands. The multi-year project, funded under Illinois’ “Rebuild Illinois” program, began in 2021 and is set to address long-standing safety and traffic flow issues.

Major ImprovementsThe new design includes two state-of-the-art flyover ramps:

  • Eastbound I-74 to northbound I-57
  • Westbound I-74 to southbound I-57

Additionally, a third auxiliary lane will be added to I-74 between Prospect and Duncan Roads to ease congestion.

Sustainability and longevity are key goals of the project. Crews are installing stainless steel rebar—doubling the ramps’ lifespan to 100 years—and metalized steel structures to reduce maintenance costs. The project also incorporates LED lighting, noise walls, and native grass landscaping for improved environmental impact.

Project Timeline

Progress has been steady, with several milestones already achieved:

  • November 16, 2024: The westbound I-74 to northbound I-57 ramp opened.
  • Spring 2025: The northbound I-57 to westbound I-74 ramp is expected to open.
  • Summer 2025: Eastbound I-74 to southbound I-57 flyover ramp scheduled to open.
  • Fall 2026: Completion of both remaining flyover ramps:
    • Eastbound I-74 to northbound I-57.
    • Westbound I-74 to southbound I-57.

During construction, detours and temporary ramps are in place to maintain traffic flow.

Benefits for DriversUpon completion, the new interchange will:

  • Eliminate dangerous merging and weaving patterns.
  • Improve travel times by allowing vehicles to maintain higher speeds.
  • Reduce congestion and traffic queueing with the new auxiliary lane.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker praised the project as a key part of his administration’s efforts to modernize infrastructure statewide. “This interchange is a lifeline for commerce and commuters alike,” he said. “With these improvements, Champaign is poised for safer and faster travel for decades to come.”
