SAVOY, IL (Chambana Today) — A new independent film from Chicago director Michael Glover Smith will make its Illinois premiere next month as part of the Savoy Lumiere, bringing filmmakers and audiences together for an evening of cinema and conversation.

HEKLA, Smith’s fifth feature, will screen Friday, May 1, with the director and lead actor Elizabeth Stam in attendance, joined by supporting actor Conor Foley and producer Aaron Wertheimer for a post-screening Q&A.

The film is narrated by Wendy Robie and follows an aspiring Chicago actress navigating a whirlwind day of auditions, personal setbacks, and self-reflection. Blending humor with emotional depth, HEKLA explores the challenges of pursuing a creative life and the resilience required to stay true to one’s ambitions.

Stam’s performance has already drawn acclaim on the festival circuit, earning honors at multiple events for her portrayal of the film’s determined and vulnerable lead. The story unfolds against the backdrop of Chicago’s theater scene, capturing both the excitement and uncertainty of an artist striving to find her voice.

The film also builds on Smith’s earlier work, serving as a spinoff to his 2022 feature RELATIVE, which previously screened at this year’s Savoy Lumiere series. Smith is known for character-driven storytelling in films such as COOL APOCALYPSE, MERCURY IN RETROGRADE, and RENDEZVOUS IN CHICAGO, all of which have earned recognition at festivals nationwide.

Organized by the Chambana Film Society, the Savoy Lumiere series continues to spotlight independent filmmaking and provide opportunities for local audiences to engage directly with artists.
