CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – On November 22, Champaign County Animal Control removed 30 cats and one bird from a home in southwest Champaign following an investigation by the Champaign Police Department. The animals were discovered living in dire conditions during the investigation of an unrelated criminal matter.

Animal Control wardens found the home filled with excessive excrement, resulting in dangerously high levels of ammonia and rendering the environment unsafe for both animals and humans. The rescued animals, which included 30 adult cats and a Budgie bird, were taken to the Champaign County Animal Control facility for examination and treatment. Many of the cats suffered from severe flea infestations, skin lesions, and abrasions.

Fourteen of the cats have been transferred to the Champaign County Humane Society, where they will be made available for adoption after undergoing health evaluations. The remaining cats, still under Animal Control’s care, are receiving medical treatment to address lingering health concerns before they, too, can find new homes.

The homeowner has been charged with animal cruelty and is scheduled for a court appearance in January 2025.

To support the medical costs of the rescued animals, Champaign County Animal Control is accepting donations at their GoFundMe page. Those interested in adopting the cats should contact the Champaign County Humane Society for more information.
