A few items of note in the CU food scene this week:

  • Red Bicycle Ice Cream has opened up in the Pines shopping center in Urbana. They describe themselves as “Farm fresh. Hand crafted. Local” ice cream. Products listed include hard-serve ice cream, milkshakes, coffee drinks, smoothies, and baked goods. They serve a wide array of flavors from the classic vanilla, to “Windsor Road” a play on rocky road. Heh…get it? The shop is open at 2740 Philo Rd, Suite D, Urbana, in the space formerly occupied by Cafe Zojo. Their hours are Wednesday through Sunday noon-9:00 pm.
  • A building permit has been issued for Oberweis Dairy Inc. for construction at the former Atlanta Bread location at 1905 S. Neil St. in Champaign. The permit lists $882,665 in work to transform the space into a shared location for Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store, and That Burger Joint. The locations were announced in December of 2016. It will be the first Central Illinois location for both stores.
  • Portillo’s has announced that next Wednesday, in honor of National Hot Dog Day, they will be selling Chicago style hot dogs for $1 with the purchase of an entrée. The offer will only apply to dine-in or drive-thru customers, and while supplies last.
