Champaign County celebrates 250 years of independence with full-day July 4 festivities

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL — After more than seven decades as a cornerstone of local Independence Day celebrations, the Champaign County Freedom Celebration (CCFC) returns in 2026 with a full day of family-friendly events, honoring both tradition and the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The celebration kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with the Youth Run, followed by a 5K Run/Walk at 9:05 a.m. The highlight of the morning is the Freedom Celebration Parade, starting at 11:05 a.m. along its historic route and led by Grand Marshal TJ Blakeman, president of the Champaign County History Museum. The parade features marching bands from local schools, creative floats, and community organizations.

Evening entertainment begins at 6 p.m., culminating in a fireworks spectacular at 9:15 p.m. under the stars. Families can enjoy food vendors, live music from Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets, inflatables, sensory activities, and face painting throughout the day.

Admission is free thanks to the support of sponsors, donors, and volunteers. The event is expected to draw thousands, making it a meaningful celebration of both independence and local culture.
