It happened to me. Over the weekend, someone tried to use my name and social security number to open a credit card at a Best Buy in North Aurora, IL. Luckily, the credit card company called me to confirm the information on the card and denied the application.
What do you do when someone steals your identity?
The FTC is the lead federal agency on identity theft and they have a FANTASTIC website: idtheft.gov.
The first step: you can apply to place a fraud alert on your information and “lock down” your information so no one can open an account. I did it with Experian and they shared the information with the other credit bureaus.
The second step is to file a police report. Yes, I called the Champaign PD.
And thirdly, create an identity theft report. This is basically the report to the FTC describing what happened and when so they can be your advocate.
I’ve already heard from so many people who have had their SSN stolen and had dozens of accounts opened up in their name, so I feel fortunate to be on the offensive and not the defensive.
Have you had your information compromised?
