January 25

1949: The first Emmy Awards were given for excellence in television. The first Emmy winner was Shirley Dinsdale and her puppet, Judy Splinters, for Most Outstanding Personality

1958: Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” became the first single ever to enter the U.K. pop chart at number one.

1962: “Twistin’ the Night Away” by Sam Cooke was released.

1971: Charles Manson and three young women followers were convicted in Los Angeles of murder and conspiracy in the 1969 slayings of actress Sharon Tate and six others.

1990: Actress Ava Gardner died of pneumonia at her London home. She was 68.

1993: Michael Bolton, Boyz II Men, Garth Brooks, Mariah Carey and Reba McEntire were among the winners at the 20th annual American Music Awards.

1994: Singer Marky Mark was sued by a Portland, Maine, woman, who said she was trampled during one of his shows. She said he invited the crowd to rush the stage after he stripped down to his underwear.

2006: “Survivor” winner Richard Hatch was convicted of failing to pay taxes on his one million dollar prize. He was sentenced to 51 months in prison.

2010: “Avatar” passed “Titanic” as the highest-grossing film of all time.

1934: The Apollo Theatre in Harlem presented its first live stage show, featuring Benny Carter and his Big Band.

1977: Guitarist Peter Green, formerly of Fleetwood Mac, was committed to a mental hospital in England. He had fired a gun at a delivery boy who was bringing a royalty check to him.

1979: “The Dukes of Hazzard” made its debut on CBS.

1988:he Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Phantom of the Opera” opened on Broadway.
