A look at some of this week’s biggest recalls and product safety information.

GM RECALLS 56K SATURNS FOR GEAR SHIFT PROBLEM
General Motors is recalling about 56,214 Saturn Aura midsize cars in the U.S. because the automatic transmission shifters can fail.

The recall affects certain cars from the 2007 and 2008 model years with four-speed transmissions.

GM says a shift cable can fracture. If the problem happens while the car is moving, the driver won’t be able to shift into “Park” or remove the ignition key. That increases the risk of the car rolling away unexpectedly.

The company will notify owners and replace the cable and mounting bracket at no cost to owners. GM hasn’t determined yet when repair parts will be available.

GM says the cars were made between April 24, 2006 and Oct. 31, 2007. GM stopped making Saturn vehicles in 2009 as it headed into bankruptcy protection.

IKEA EXPANDS LAMP RECALL
IKEA is reissuing and expanding a recall of more than 3.5 million children’s lamps, to include more models. The lamps pose a strangulation hazard, with multiple injuries being reported, including an infant who died after becoming entangled in the cord.

The lamps sold from 1984 through last month, were available in IKEA stores and via the company’s catalog. A complete list of the recalled lamps can be found on the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website. Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the lamp and contact IKEA for a repair kit.

740K THERMOSTATS RECALLED OVER FIRE FEARS
White-Rodgers is recalling more than 740,000 home thermostats over fears they can spark a fire. There have been at least seven incidents reported related to the thermostats, including two that caused minor property damage, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The thermostats were sold nationwide from 2006 through December and could have also been sold or installed by HVAC companies. This recall involves four models of White-Rodgers digital thermostats. The thermostats are white with blue lighted screens and have one of the following names printed on the front of them: “COMFORTSENTRY,” “DICO,” “Emerson,” “Frigidaire,” “Maytag,” “Nutone,” “Partners Choice,” “Rheem,” “Ruud,” “Unico,” “Water Furnace,” “Westinghouse,” “White-Rodgers” or “Zonefirst.” The thermostats have a battery door on the top left corner. There are three or four buttons to the right and also below the thermostat screen. Recalled thermostats do not show a battery icon on the left side of the blue lighted screen.

Consumers should stop using the thermostat and contact the company for a repair kit.

OVERHEATING PROMPTS PORTABLE CHARGER RECALL
Nearly 99,000 portable power supplies sold under the name Vibe USB Mobile Power Bar are being recalled due to an overheating hazard. The power bars were sold at Five Below stores nationwide through March in black, white, blue, green, pink and purple. The rectangular-shaped power bars measure one square inch by three inches long and have a cord with key ring attached at the end.

Consumers should immediately stop using the chargers, as there have been reports of them overheating and melting. Customers can contact the manufacturer for a refund and a coupon for a future purchase at a Five Below store.
